Vikings Sweep DH from Beaver Softball

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Mar. 16, 2024) - The Buena Vista softball team traveled to Augustana College (Ill.) for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, and it was the host Vikings sweeping both games from the Beavers by scores of 12-0 (5 inn.) and 5-1, respectively.

Augustana scored all of its runs in game one in just two separate innings. It used a four-run first inning to take the early lead before breaking things open with eight runs in the bottom of the third. A pair of sacrifice flies scored the first two runs of the game before the Vikings' senior catcher, Morgan Biefeldt, launched a two-run home run over the fence in center that made it 4-0.

The first nine batters in the third reached for Augustana to ignite the big inning for the Vikings, as they finished the frame with seven hits and took advantage of both BVU errors in the game.

Buena Vista managed only singles by Paige Druskis, Keirsten Trayte and Claire Woodworth in the contest while the Vikings chalked up 10 hits overall.

Kennedi Claycomb dips to 4-2 overall on the year after suffering the loss. The senior righthander pitched 0.2 innings and was tagged with four runs and two hits while walking two. Kali Irlmeier was the first to come in relief and was charged with eight runs (six earned) and six hits over 1.1 innings. Kenzi Dumbaugh allowed only two hits in her two scoreless innings to close things out.

The Vikings jumped out fast again in game two by plating three runs in the first and an unearned run in the second to build another 4-0 advantage. Buena Vista loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth and later got on the board after an infield single to third base from Geneva Galler that scored Nattie Murillo from third to make it 4-1.

An RBI single to centerfield in the sixth inning allowed Augustana to tack on its final run of the day for the game's final score.

Madalyn Elwood went 2-for-3 with a double to lead BVU at the plate while five others added one single apiece. Augustana edged BVU with nine hits, including a pair of doubles.

Trayte went the distance inside the circle for the Beavers and dips to 0-3 on the year.

Buena Vista sits at 7-11 overall and is now off until March 29 when it travels to UW-Platteville for a non-conference doubleheader against the Pioneers.
