Tough Second Quarter Sends Beavers to Road Loss at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Jan. 6, 2024) - Abby Nagel scored 11 points to help lead the Buena Vista women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, but the Beavers were held to only two second quarter points en route to an 80-44 American Rivers Conference road loss at the University of Dubuque.

The Spartans were clinging to a slim 13-10 lead late in the first quarter before extending the margin to 20-14 heading to the second. After shooting better than 58 percent in that first quarter, the Beavers made only 1-of-10 attempts in the second as Dubuque outscored them 33-2 to build a commanding 52-16 halftime cushion.

BVU was held to 30 percent shooting throughout the second half and was unable to go on any run. The two teams each scored 28 points over the final 20 points.

Nagel was the lone Beaver to score in double figures and was 4-of-10 shooting while making one of the team's three long range buckets. Senior Addison Weber also made a three-pointer, and she and Allie Leisherfollowed with seven points. Jenna Hallock chipped in with five points to go along with a career-best 10 rebounds. Sophomore Danika Demers also turned in five points and dished out five assists.

The Beavers made 18-of-54 field goal attempts (33.4 percent) and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Dubuque, meanwhile, cooled off drastically in the second half but still shot over 43 percent from the field and used the strength of an 11-of-23 effort from downtown (47.8 percent) to pull away.

Megan Teal scored a game-high 16 points to lead three players in double figures for the Spartans (9-5, 3-2 A-R-C).

Buena Vista drops to 1-11 on the season (0-5 A-R-C) and travels to Simpson College on Jan. 10 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
