Men's Track & Field Claims Five Titles during Dennis Young Alumni Classic

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Jan. 27, 2024) - The Buena Vista University men's track & field team had a strong showing on its home track by claiming five individual titles on Saturday during the annual Dennis Young Alumni Classic.

Senior Kyle Miller claimed the title in the 1,000m run and ran the 10th-fastest time in all of DIII this season at 2:31.29. That mark fell just over a second shy of matching the school record.

Fellow senior Zackary Huffman set a new personal best time of 8.81 in the 60-meter hurdles to win the event as freshman Nick Walch took seventh. Sophomore Abraham Christensen swept the throwing events for the Beavers, including a personal best heave of 14.81 meters in the shot put which ranks 10th in the A-R-C this season. He took home the top spot in the weight throw with a toss of 14.60.

Freshman Devon Schultz was victorious in the pole vault by setting a massive personal best after clearing 4.25 meters (13-11.25). That height moves him up two spots to third in the A-R-C rankings this season.

BVU had a pair of individuals qualify into the 60-meter finals, and junior John Jeannise finished runner-up in a new personal best time of 6.99 seconds which ranks fifth in the conference. Sophomore Ashton Bates would edge Jeannise by 0.03 seconds to place third in the 200m dash and move up to 11th in the A-R-C.

Buena Vista chalked up a total of 145 points on the day and was runner-up behind Southwestern CC. The Spartans won the meet with 242 points.

The Beavers return to action on Feb. 2-3 at the Wartburg College Indoor Select. Action on Friday begins with the multi-events at 3 p.m.
