GRINNELL, Iowa (Sept. 5, 2023) - The Buena Vista volleyball team traveled to Grinnell College on Tuesday night for a non-conference match against the Pioneers, but struggled a bit offensively en route to a 3-0 loss inside of Darby Gymnasium (25-12, 25-23, 25-11).
Grinnell totaled 35 total kills over the three sets with BVU not far behind at 24, but the difference was the miscues as the Beavers combined for 26 attack errors compared to only six from the Pioneers.
In the opening set, Grinnell pulled away from what was a 3-2 score with a 12-1 run that made it a 15-3 advantage. BVU scored five of the next six points, but it was too-little-too-late as the Pioneers rattled off four straight en route to the 25-11 victory.
BVU got down big in the second set, but was able to rally all the way back with a 10-1 run that tied things up at 17-17. Senior
Rachel Brockney had three straight ace serves during that surge as the Beavers were aided by scoring eight straight. The two teams then traded points all the way up to 20-20 before Grinnell too advantage of serving error and an attack error that sparked a 4-1 run as the Pioneers held on for the 25-23 win.
Grinnell scored the first eight points of the third set and never looked back as it improved to 4-1 on the season.
Senior
Rachel Brockney had a team-high six kills, eight digs and four ace serves to lead Buena Vista while
Molly McCauley followed with five kills and five assists.
Molly Bense also chipped in with eight digs and
Jilly Janssen dished out 18 assists.
Keira Sullivan turned in 12 kills and a .417 attack percentage to lead the Pionners.
Buena Vista is now 2-3 overall. The team travels to St. Paul, Minn., this weekend to take part in the Macalester Invite on Sept. 8 and 9. The Beavers are scheduled to begin play against the host school on Friday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.
