Football Shutout 47-0 at No. 3 Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa (Sept. 16, 2023) - The Buena Vista football team faced a tough test on Saturday as it traveled to No. 3 Wartburg College to begin American Rivers Conference play, as the Knights handed the Beavers a 47-0 loss inside of Walston Hoover Stadium.

Wartburg scored touchdowns on each of its first three drives to build a 21-0 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter and would add a fourth midway through the quarter en route to a 26-0 halftime lead.

BVU was held without a single first down until the third quarter but the Beavers would quickly turn it over following the first down on an interception.

The Knights scored three rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, including two from fifth-year Hunter Clasen, for a 47-0 lead. They were held off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter after losing a fumble and missing a field goal attempt.

Wartburg (3-0, 1-0 A-R-C) finished with 465 yards of total offense while holding the Beavers to only 58. 

Clasen, the league's leading rusher, ended with 83 yards on 15 carries to go along with three touchdowns. Dawson Rud added 75 yards on 11 rushing attempts. Fifth-year quarterback Nile McLaughlin completed 16-of-26 pass attempts for 227 yards and three scores. Carter Henry hauled in seven of those for 120 yards and one score.

Junior Zach Herrera was 4-of-10 passing for just 10 yards while Austin Smith carried the ball seven times for 33 yards.

Ernest Jones and Landon Weber each tallied seven tackles to help lead the defense with Weber recovering one fumble.

Buena Vista is now 0-3 (0-1 A-R-C) and will have a bye next weekend. The team returns to the field on Saturday, Sept. 30, when it hosts Simpson College at 1 p.m. during Family Weekend.
