Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 13, 2023) - The No. 23 Buena Vista University baseball team had its run for an American Rivers Conference Tournament title come to an end on Saturday as it was defeated 4-2 by No. 5 seed Dubuque inside of Veterans Memorial Stadium.
BVU jumped out to an early 2-0 in the top of the first following an RBI double from
Jordan Mathewson and an RBI single from
Evan Taylor. The Spartans cut the deficit in half in the second inning on a bases loaded walk, and that's how things stood until the fifth when the Spartans plated three runs to take a 4-2 lead.
After neither team scored in the sixth inning,
Zach Pleggenkuhle came on to relief BVU starter
Dalton Glenn to start the seventh, but the game would go into a three-and-a-half hour weather delay with two outs and a Dubuque runner at third. Following the delay, senior
Calvin Harris came on in relief of Pleggenkuhle and struck out the batter to end the inning.
The Beavers couldn't collect the big hit when they needed it most late in the game, stranding a pair of runners in the eighth and another in the ninth. For the game, the team stranded 10 while Dubuque left 15 men on base.
Joel Garcia was 3-for-4 to help lead the way at the plate while Harris and
Drew Taylor joined
Jordan Mathewson with doubles. BVU finished with eight hits overall.
The Beavers are now 30-9 overall and will await its fate for next weekend's NCAA Regional Tournament. The selection show for that tournament takes place on Monday morning, May 15.
