PELLA, Iowa (April 18, 2023) - The Buena Vista baseball team resumed action on Tuesday afternoon with a midweek road matchup against Central College. Buena Vista prevailed, 3-1, marking their 10th straight win.
BVU took an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning after scoring a pair of runs on an Evan Taylor sacrifice fly and a Jordan Mathewson groundout. Central responded with a solo homerun in the third inning to make it 2-1. The score would remain there until the Beavers added an insurance run in the seventh on a RBI double from Drew Taylor that scored Joel Garcia all the way from first. Central would threaten again in the seventh moving a runner into scoring position, but failed to capitalize. It would prove to be their last opportunity as the BVU pitching staff was nearly spotless the rest of the way.Â
The staff used five pitchers to combine for just one allowed run. Nolan Faber received the start on the mound. The sophomore pitcher threw a strong five innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out three. Zach Pleggenkuhle, Brayden Polzein, Logan Lape-Brinkman, and Calvin Harris each threw a scoreless inning in relief. Faber earned the winning decision while Harris was credited with the save. The save marks the 16th save of his career, moving him within one of the program's all-time record.
The Beavers lineup compiled three runs on seven hits. They were bolstered by the top of the order with Garcia scoring twice while Evan and Drew Taylor each drove in a run. Logan Mueller also chipped in a team high-two hits, including one of the team's two doubles.
NEXT UP: BVU takes the field next at home April 21 to begin a three-game series against Luther College. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. A series victory by the Beavers would lock up at least a share of the program's second straight regular season American Rivers Conference title and a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.
