AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 8, 2023) - The Buena Vista baseball team had its current overall win streak halted at four games on Wednesday night with a tough 5-1 loss by Immaculata University.
The Mighty Macs were held to only five hits in the contest but got some timely hits that led to their scoring. The first of those came in the fourth inning when they got a big one-out double after back-to-back walks began the frame. Late in the inning, they got a two-out RBI single that made it 3-0.
Sacrifice flies by Immaculata (4-2) in both the seventh and eighth innings pushed the margin to 5-0 before the Beavers, who out-hit the Mighty Macs 10-5, tried to rally in the ninth. Back-to-back singles to begin the inning for the Beavers put runners at 1st and 2nd, and after a strikeout,
Caden Mathewson single to load the bases with only one out. Zack Beekman put BVU on the board with an RBI single, but consecutive strikeouts would end the game and leave the bases full.
Beekman, along with
Caden Mathewson and
Calvin Harris registered two hits to help lead the offense which had all 10 hits go for singles.Â
Zach Pleggenkuhle got the start on the mound for the Beavers and battled through five innings in which he allowed three runs and just two hits, but was hindered by five walks, despite striking out four. Thomas Peyton and
Landon Howard were each charged with a run during their one inning of work before
Nolan Faber came on to work the eighth and walked one and struck out one.
Buena Vista is now 8-2 on the year and will get the benefit of two days off before retaking the field on Saturday morning for an 8:45 a.m. (CT) first pitch against No. 23 Aurora University.
