GRINNELL, Iowa (Feb. 11, 2023) - The Buena Vista women's indoor track & field team came away with three individual titles and scored 106 points which was good enough for second place overall in the team race on Saturday during the Darren Young Classic, hosted by Grinnell College.
All three of the team's championships came in the field events with senior
Becca Simpson highlighting the day by sweeping the titles in both the shot put and weight throw. It was the second straight day in which she claimed the victory in the weight throw as she turned in a toss of 56-5.75 to win by six-and-a-half feet. She was equally as dominant in the shot put, coming through with a heave of 14.13 meters on her final attempt to pull away in the event and win by nearly three feet.
Jessica Sump began her strong day by winning the long jump with a leap of 16-8.0 to win by nearly one full foot.
Aside from Simpson, BVU took third and fourth in the weight throw with Anna Friedrichesen posting a toss of 49-6.5 to take third and
Courtney Johnson right behind at 46-1.5 to take fourth. Friedrichesen was also seventh in the shot put.
Carla Lopez continued the strong showing in the field events for the Beavers by taking second in the triple jump at 32-0 and was seventh in the long jump.
Amil-lion Derrick was right in between Lopez and Sump in the long jump by taking fifth at 15.00.

Dominique Rivers also made the finals for BVU and placed eighth in a tight race at 8.19 seconds. Meanwhile, Sump headed to the track and placed third in the 60m hurdles for the Beavers while Derrick came in fifth. Both ladies turned in their fastest times of the year.
