The two teams went back-and-forth for much of the first half as neither team was able to build a double-digit lead. Grinnell held a 22-16 lead after one quarter and extended the margin to seven at the break, 38-31.
The Pioneers came out strong in the third quarter with eight made field goals while BVU was just 4-of-18, and outscored the Beavers 21-11 in the period. Buena Vista finished strong by shooting 9-of-15 from the field in the final quarter, but Grinnell held steady by nailing 4-of-5 attempts from downtown.
For the game, BVU finished just 33.8 percent from the field, 6-of-25 from beyond the arc, and only 14-of-24 from the free-throw line. The Pioneers (3-2) were a touch better at 44.8 percent overall, despite going only 7-of-20 from long range, but made 20-of-24 at the charity stripe.
Buena Vista dips to 1-2 on the year and opens American Rivers Conference play on Nov. 29 at home versus Central College (2-2, 0-1 A-R-C) at 5:30 p.m.
