CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Oct. 7, 2023) - The Buena Vista football team was on the road Saturday afternoon at Coe College (5-1, 3-1 A-R-C), but it was the Kohawks chalking up 283 yards rushing in the contest to help lift them to a 52-7 victory at Clark Field.
The game was tied at 7-7 after both teams found the end-zone over the first six minutes of the contest. Coe struck first after blocking a BVU punt deep in Beaver territory on the first series of the game. After taking over at the BVU nine-yard line, the Kohawks struck first on a six-yard touchdown pass just three plays later, and the PAT made it 7-0.
BVU answered right back on the ensuing drive and got excellent field position to start with following a 45-yard kickoff return from junior
Eman Alaniz that put the ball right at midfield. Alaniz came up with a big play later in the drive when BVU was facing a fourth-and-eight from the Coe 31-yard line. He would haul in a 31-yard tochdown pass from quarterback
Zach Herrera with just under nine minutes on the clock to cap a seven-play, 50-yard drive.
Two plays into the next Coe possession, quarterback Carter Maske hooked up with Jeron Senters on a 60-yard touchdown pass that quickly made it 14-7. The Kohawks would add one more first quarter touchdown pass to make it 21-7 with under two minutes to go. Both quarterbacks traded interceptions on the game's next two drives followed by three straight punts. Coe nearly coughed up the football at midfield on a fumble, but the Kohawks were able to recover for a first down. Later in that same drive, Trenton Barnes, scampered in from seven yards out to give Coe a 28-7 cushion at the half.
The Kohawks scored three times in the third quarter to extend the lead to 49-7 before adding a 31-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter for the final score.Â
BVU forced a Kohawk turnover early in the second half but were unable to take advantage after throwing an interception. The team then went three-and-out on its next two drives before turning it over on downs and being forced to punt on its final drive of the game.
Coe had five players rush for at least 40 yards in the contest, led by Caden Mata's 83 yards on five carries which was aided by a 30-yard run.
Keaton Huebner was Buena Vista's leading rusher with only 19 yards on 14 attempts. The Beavers finished the game with only 26 net yards on 30 rushes.
Maske completed 10-of-13 pass attempts for 190 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Coe aerial attack while Herrera was 12-of-17 for 102 yards for the Beavers, including one touchdown and one interception. Senters hauled in four of Maske's completions for 113 yards and a pair of TD grabs. Alaniz totaled 88 receiving for BVU on seven catches, including the team's one touchdown.
Trey Ortman and
Troy Reynolds each registered seven tackles to help lead BVU defensively with
Dylan Berens turning in the only tackle for loss.
Jorge Pinon intercepted his first pass of the year and did return it 23 yards.
Buena Vista is now 0-5 (0-3 A-R-C) and hosts Luther College (0-5, 0-4 A-R-C) on Oct. 14 for Homecoming. Kickoff inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
