WAVERLY, Iowa (Oct. 24, 2023) - The Buena Vista men's soccer team played its final American Rivers Conference match of the season on Wednesday evening at Wartburg College, but it was the Knights coming through with a pair of second half goals to hold off the Beavers in a tight contest, 2-0.
The two teams combined for 15 shots over the first 45 minutes of play, but neither side was able to punch one through leading to a 0-0 score at intermission. The Knights would break the scoreless match early in the second half with a goal from Mitchell Dickson during the 53rd minute. That's how things stood until Wartburg drew a foul inside the box which led to a penalty kick goal with only 10 minutes remaining.
Wartburg finished the match with 23 total shots while Buena Vista had only five. Edvin Rizvic led all players with seven total shots while Dickson followed with six.
Eduardo Garcia led BVU with three of its five shots, including one on-goal. The Beavers entered the match having scored a goal in four straight matches and five of their last six. It was the longest such streak for the program since scoring a goal in its first five matches of last season.
Zachary Sigler went the distance in-goal for BVU and posted five saves.
Buena Vista is 1-14-2 overall and wraps up conference play at 0-8. The team will play its season finale on Thursday night (Oct. 26) when it hosts Hamline University at 7 p.m. The two teams will resume its match from September 3 that was halted after roughly 20 minutes due to extreme heat. The Pipers were leading the match 1-0.
