CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Jan. 7, 2023) - The Buena Vista women's basketball team rallied from an early 12-point deficit to take its first lead late in the first half, but Coe College would outscore BVU by 10 in the fourth quarters to hand the Beavers a tough 61-55 loss inside Kohawk Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Coe jumped out to a 16-4 lead out of the gate before BVU settled in and chipped away at that lead. The Beavers used a 20-4 run to grab its largest lead of the half at 24-20 just 90 seconds into the second quarter. It was back-and-forth from there before Coe scored the final eight points of the half to take a 30-25 lead into the break.
The Beavers held Coe without a point until midway through the third quarter and would outscore the Kohawks 14-5 in the period to take a 39-35 lead to the fourth. Coe used a big fourth quarter, shooting better than 55 percent from the field in the frame and making 12-of-17 at the free-throw line to hold off BVU. The Beavers trailed 51-49 with 3:30 remaining, but were then held to just one point over the next two minutes as Coe (12-3, 4-2 A-R-C) extended the margin to 58-50 en route to the five-point win.
Danika Demers led BVU with 10 points while
Lindsey Anhalt added a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. The Beavers finished the game shooting 28.8 percent from the field and 6-of-23 from long distance.
Cadee Kirkham led all scorers witth 16 points for the Kohawks while Kaayln Petersen added 11 points, 12 rebounds.
Buena Vista is now 6-8 overall (1-5 A-R-C) and will remain on the road to play at Central College on Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
