Box Score STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 3, 2022) - The Buena Vista football team hosted Gustavus Adolphus to kick-off its season for the second straight year, but the Gusties used a strong first half to build a 49-0 lead and went on to take the opener, 62-20.
The Beaver defense came out strong in the early going, but BVU was unable to get points on the board. The Beavers missed a pair of field goal attempts on two of their first three drives after getting the ball from Gustavus Adolphus on a punt and interception. BVU picked-off the Gusties on two of their first four possessions.
Gustavus took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Jake Breitbach caught the first of his three touchdown passes in the contest. The Gusties went on to led 21-0 after the first quarter before adding 28 more points in the second en route to a 49-0 halftime advantage.
BVU, which was held to 13 first downs in the game, did all of its scoring in the second half. Freshman quarterback
Seth Gallardo took over for starter
Zach Herrera late in the second half and did throw his first two career touchdown passes. The first of those was a 56-yard strike to senior
Isaia Morones, who finished with a team-high 73 yards receiving. Freshman running back
Meven Obregon also plunged his way into the end zone with 6:41 remaining in regulation for his first career rushing touchdown. Â
Gallardo completed 7-of-10 pass attempts for 138 yards and the two scores. Herrera was 10-of-29 threw the air for 98 yards and was intercepted twice.
Gustavus Adolphus out-gained BVU 553-316 in total offense and held 30-13 edge in first downs. Quarterback Daniel Rennie tossed for over 260 yards and had four TD passes to lead the Gusties offense.
Sophomore
Aydan Guenther had a team-best seven total tackles to help lead the way defensively for BVU.
Brady McConaty followed with six stops and one forced fumble.
Buena Vista (0-1) will look to bounce back next Saturday when it goes on the road for the first time to play at Lakeland University (Wis.)Â Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
