STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 17, 2022) - The Buena Vista volleyball team had one of its better offensive outputs of the year on Saturday afternoon as it hosted Martin Luther in a non-conference match, and after taking the first two sets, the team would hold off the Knights in four sets for its first home win of the year.
Junior
Rachel Brockney had yet another strong performance on the offensive attack, finishing with a match-high 17 kills and a .270 attack percentage.
Hannah Smith and
Courtney Johnson each followed with 11 kills as Smith completed the double-double with 10 digs. Senior
Taylor Wedemeyer had an all-around stellar match with 43 assists to go along with 12 digs, four kills, two ace serve and five total blocks.
Molly Bense led BVU wih 17 digs and also chipped in with six assists.
Wedemeyer had a pair of ace serves during a 4-0 start to the match for BVU. It later scored five straight before opening a 21-6 lead en route to a 25-11 triumph in the first set. The second was much closer with the Beavers needing a 4-0 spurt to pull even at 8-8. The Knights would later hold an 18-17 lead before kills from Johnson and Brockney sparked a big 4-0 run that put BVU back ontop 21-18. Martin Luther cut the deficit down to one multiple times down the stretch, but BVU was able to hold on for the 25-23 win.
The Knights (4-8) forced a fourth set after squeaking out a 25-23 win of their own, but the Beavers used a big 6-0 run to open a 19-10 lead en route to the 25-18 win.
Buena Vista improves to 5-7 overall and returns to American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday night by hosting Central College at 6:00 p.m. inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
