Volleyball Falls 3-1 in A-R-C Opener at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa (Sept. 14, 2022) - The Buena Vista volleyball team went on the road Wednesday night to begin American Rivers Conference play at defending champion Wartburg College, but the Knights rallied back late in the second set to go in front 2-1 and then rolled in the fourth set to take the match 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-11.

It was back-and-forth early in set one with the score tied at 4-4 before Wartburg, who continues to receive votes in the latest national rankings, scored five of the next six points to build a 9-5 lead. The margin later grew o 18-8 before Wartburg went on to take the opening set, 25-16.

The Beavers bounced back in the second by using a key 6-1 spurt late in the frame to take a 19-13 lead. Wartburg wasn't about to go away without a fight and clawed back to within 22-20, but the Beavers go kills from Hannah Smith and Courtney Smith to help aid them to a 25-21 win.

BVU looked poised to go up in the match with a 22-20 lead in the third set after having overcome an early 12-7 deficit. The Knights, however, rallied to score four straight points for a 24-22 lead and capped things off with a kill to win 25-23.

It was all Knights in set four as they jumped out to a 12-3 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-11 triumph.

Junior Rachel Brockney was the only player for BVU to reach double digits in kills as she finished with 14 to go along with 10 digs. Freshman Molly McCauley followed with eight kills while sophomore Courtney Johnson chipped in with seven. Senior Taylor Wedemeyer dished out 35 assists and added 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Over the weekend, she became just the fourth player in program history to reach 2,000 career assists and currently sits with 2,084. Molly Bense led BVU with 20 digs on the night while Skylar Cole added four total blocks.

The Beavers, now 3-6 overall, are right back in action on Friday for a pair of matches at the Loras College Tournament at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. before returning home on Saturday afternoon to host Martin Luther at 1:00 p.m.
