PREVIEW: Baseball Travels to Coe for 3-Game Series to Wrap up Regular Season

STORM LAKE, Iowa (May 6, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team is back in action with a three game weekend series against Coe College. The series will mark the end of both conference play and the regular season.

LAST TIME OUT

The Beavers swept a three game series vs the University of Dubuque to earn a share of the regular season conference championship, their first since 2014. A Buena Vista win or Loras loss this weekend would earn the Beavers an outright regular season title. 

ABOUT COE

Coe enters their first matchup since a 6-2 loss at Luther College on April 26th. They were originally scheduled for a double header last weekend at University of Chicago before the matchups were cancelled. 

Coe enters with an offense that ranks last in the conference with 107 runs. They also rank last with 7 homeruns. They are currently the only team to not crack double digit homeruns. Coe however ranks first with 51 stolen bases (63 attempts). Coe's leading hitter is TJ Johnson who is hitting .304 with 24 hits, 4 doubles, 9 RBI, 13 runs, and 6 stolen bases. 

Coe will rely on a pitching that ranks first with a 4.21 ERA. The staff has held opponents to a .251 average. Leading the staff in ERA is Jordan Joselit. Joselit is 2-0 with a 2.38 ERA across 22.2 innings of work. Following Joselit is Tyce Johnson. Tyce Johnson is 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA across 29.2 innings of work. 

ABOUT BUENA VISTA

The Beavers enter the weekend ranked third in the first ranked set of NCAA Regional Rankings. 

They will boast the conference's top ranked offense. As a squad they ranked first in runs (176), hits (235), RBI (163), and average (.320). Evan Taylor led the team with a conference leading .446 average and 13 doubles to along with 23 runs and 27 RBI. Following Taylor were four other Beavers that ranked in the top 25 for batting average: Logan Mueller, Jordan Mathewson, Calvin Harris, and Joel Garcia. Mueller hit .373 with 25 hits, 4 doubles, 11 RBI, 23 runs, and 8 stolen bases. J. Mathewson hit .368 with 32 hits, 6 doubles, 2 homeruns, 15 RBI, and 22 runs. Harris hit .352 with 31 hits, 8 doubles, 2 homeruns, 21 RBI, and 12 runs scored. Garcia hit .329 with 28 hits, 7 doubles, 18 RBIs, 24 runs. 

They will enter with a pitching staff that ranks 6th with a 5.04 ERA. Heading the staff will be the reigning A-R-C pitcher of the week, Mason Gehling. Gehling is 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA with 42 strikeouts across 29.0 innings of work. Along with Gehling, the Beavers will have Dalton Glenn and Morgan Smith. Glenn is 4-0 with a 3.66 ERA along with 42 strikeouts across 39.1 innings of work. Smith is 2-2 with a 3.79 ERA with 49 strikeouts across 40.1 innings of work.

NEXT TIME OUT

The Beavers will compete in the American Rivers conference tournament. They will seek their first tournament championship since 2019.
