Softball Splits DH at No. 22 Loras

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DUBUQUE, Iowa (April 9, 2022) - The Buena Vista softball team battled toe-to-toe at No. 22 Loras College on Saturday afternoon and after dropping a tough 2-0 contest in the opener came right back and blanked the Duhawks 5-0 in the finale.

Senior Ashtyn Miller threw a gem in the opener despite dropping to 8-3 on the year.  She went the distance, allowed just four hits and struck out 11.  Nattie Murillo doubled and had two base hits for BVU but the team couldn't get the big knock when it needed it most. The team out-hit Loras, 6-4, but stranded eight runners in the contest.

Loras (16-2, 3-1 A-R-C) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first with a solo home run and that proved to be its only hit until the fifth when it also scored its final run with a two-out RBI single.

Maddy Elwood gave BVU the big boost in game two with a three-run home run that followed an RBI single from Kennedi Claycomb earlier in the inning.  Ashtyn Miller added a solo home run in the third for the final run.  Murillo recorded two more hits to lead the Beavers at the plate, including her second double of the day.

Peyton Gross picked up the win inside the circle, going the distance and allowing just three hits and striking out seven as she and the Beavers snapped the Duhawks' seven-game win streak.

Buena Vista is now 19-9 on the year (3-3 A-R-C) and returns home for its final two home doubleheaders of the year, starting with Central College on Wednesday afternoon, April 13, at 3:00 p.m.
