Softball Rolls off Two More Wins to Improve to 9-3 Overall

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Buena Vista University softball team played its first two games down in the Arizona desert on Tuesday and the results remain the same as the team chalked up two more wins to make it seven straight overall and improve to 9-3.

BVU opened the day against Baldwin Wallace University and was in a tight contest until rallying late.  The Beavers jumped out to the early 2-0 lead after one inning thanks to Carlee Guyett leading off the bottom of the frame with her first home run of the season and Nattie Murillo later adding an RBI single.

The Yellowjackets responded in a big way by plating all five of their runs in the top of the second inning which included a big two-run double.  Starter Ashtyn Miller settled down after that frame and allowed just four bases runners the rest of the way.  The right hander went the distance and scattered seven hits while striking out a career-high 14 batters and walking only two.

Miller also got the job done at the plate by launching a big two-run home run in the third inning that brought BVU back within 5-4 before Murillo tied things up at 5-5 with a solo blast in the sixth.  Later in the inning, Nikki Griggs gave the Beavers the lead back at 6-5 when she reached on an infield single before a fielding error on the play by the first baseman allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Guyett and Murillo each finished with two hits, as did Alyssa Barnhart.

Sul Ross State then tried to slow down BVU in the final game of the day and would take the early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first.  BVU, however, answered right back with seven unanswered runs, including five in the fourth inning to build a 7-1 lead.  Barnhart had the big two-run single in the inning while Wendt and Miller also drove in runs.  Rylee Cain got the scoring started for the Beavers in the second with an RBI single before Wendt put BVU on top 2-1 with an RBI single in the third.

Sul Ross scored its final run with a home run in the fourth as Guyett doubled home the game's final run in the top of the seventh.  Guyett and Cain each finished with three hits apiece, including a pair of doubles from Guyett.

Senior Peyton Gross turned in yet another solid performance inside the circle, going the distance and allowing just two runs and six hits while striking out six and issuing two walks to improve her overall record to 4-1 on the year.

Buena Vista will face the same two teams again on Wednesday beginning with Sul Ross at 12:15 p.m. MST (1:15 p.m CST).  The Beavers and Yellowjackets will square off at 2:30 p.m. MST (3:30 p.m. CST).
