STORM LAKE, Iowa (February 24, 2022) - The Buena Vista University women's indoor track & field team heads into this weekend's American Rivers Conference Championships with a great deal of confidence and expectations following a regular season that has consisted of several highly-ranked individual and team finishes.
The Beavers, who have captured multiple team titles during the indoor campaign and are currently ranked No. 11 in the latest regional team rankings, have not finished in the top-five of the overall team race at the conference indoor championships since taking fifth back in 2013. That's the only time in program history that it has finished among the top half.
Entering the weekend, BVU has 11 individual or relay events that are currently ranked in the top-10 of the conference, including five in the top-5. The top-8 overall finishes will earn team points while the top-3 place finishers earn all-conference accolades.
Highlighting the list of events is senior
Becca Simpson, who takes the stage ranked third in the shot put (13.80m; 45-3.5) and fourth in the weight throw (17.01m; 55-9.75). She has already set school records in both events this season and is currently ranked 10th nationally in the shot put and 14th in the weight throw.
Jessica Sump is third in the league in both the long jump (5.45m; 17-10.375) and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.39s).
Anna Brennan (7th) and
Courtney Johnson (9th) are also in the top-10 in the shot put heading into the championships with Brennan currently ranked 25th nationally at 13.02m (42-8.75).
The championships, hosted by the University of Dubuque will get underway on Friday, February 25 and wrap up on Saturday, February 26.
