STORM LAKE, Iowa - Buena Vista freshman
Danika Demers scored 12 points and dished out five assists and recorded two steals to lead eight different players that scored at least six points, as the Beavers improved to 3-0 inside Siebens Fieldhouse this season with a 65-55 victory over visiting Nebraska Wesleyan University on Wednesday night.
Demers was 4-of-9 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from downtown while also making both free-throw attempts.
McKenna Cone was right behind with nine points,
Lindsey Anhalt added eight points and six rebounds, and five other players chipped in with six points each.
Maddie Hilgendorf was among that group and also grabbed six boards.
The Beavers shot 43 percent from the field in the game, and did a lot of work at the free-throw line, making 16-of-17 attempts.
BVU held the Prairie Wolves (5-4, 1-2 A-R-) to just nine total shot attempts in the first quarter while the Beavers made 9-of-20 to lead 19-9 at the end of the quarter. NWU hung around and cut the deficit to 31-29 at the break before the Beavers then held them to just 2-of-11 shooting to begin the second half to extend the margin to 53-40 heading to the fourth. The Beavers, despite a cold shooting final period was able to hold off a slight surge by the Prairie Wolves in the fourth.
The Beavers outscored NWU by 14 points in the paint (30-16) and held a 36-23 edge on the glass. Brianna Denton scored a game-high 15 points to pace the Prairie Wolves.
Buena Vista improves to 5-5 overall (1-2 A-R-C) and will look to remain perfect on its home court when it hosts Luther College on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
