Volleyball Takes Down St. Catherine to Improve to 4-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Sept. 10, 2021) - Senior Sydney McLaren turned in a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs while Katie Serkiz added 11 kills, and the duo helped lead the Buena Vista University volleyball team to a 3-1 road victory at St. Catherine's on Friday night on day one of the St. Paul Tournament.

BVU came out strong and took the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-22, respectively.  The team forced seven hitting errors by St. Catherine while committing only two of its own.  The Beavers dropped a 25-17 decision in the third set but rebounded nicely in the fourth, building an early 10-5 cushion and never looking back en route to a 25-17 margin.

McLaren had just two attack errors for the match on 42 total swings while posting a .262 hitting percentage.  Serkiz was nearly as efficient with only four miscues on 24 total swings for a .292 mark.  Sophomore Rachel Brockney just missed out on double-digits with nine kills while finishing with a .350 attack percentage.  As a team, the Beavers were at .220.  Junior Taylor Wedemeyer dished out 32 assists and had two of the team's five ace serves.

Senior Jade Hays followed McLaren with 13 digs and also had one ace while Kaylee Nosbisch turned in 10 digs and one ace.

Maggie Rosen (11 kills) and Lexie Petrick (10 kills) led St. Catherine (2-5) at the net with Petrick also adding 10 digs.

"Tonight was a fun match," said BVU head coach Rosie Aumann. "St. Kate's is always very competitive against us and have a solid squad.  The ladies came out strong and fought through to finish.  We're looking forward to getting back out there on day two tomorrow with more competition."

Buena Vista goes after its fifth win in six outings on Saturday morning when the Beavers face Martin Luther College at 11:00 a.m.  BVU swept the Knights in the season opener back on September 1.  The team will wrap up play at 1:00 p.m against Hamline University.
