STORM LAKE, Iowa (July 16, 2021) - Buena Vista University head softball coach, Mandie Nocita, has announced the hiring of Ed Deugan as her top assistant coach beginning this fall.

Deugan brings extensive knowledge and a great deal of softball coaching and instructing experience from various levels to the BVU softball program.  Since 2018, he has been coaching at Iowa State University and was part of an NCAA Tournament berth in 2021.  From 2015-18, Deugan coached at Grand View University and was part of an NAIA Tournament berth with the Vikings each season.  During both tenures helped coach the defense and worked with hitters.

In addition to his regular coaching duties over the years, Deugan has devoted a great deal of his time since 2003 serving as a camp instructor for Higher Ground Softball based out of Tifton, Ga.  It's an organization that provides numerous camps and clinics for softball players and coaches across the country of all levels throughout each year.

"I couldn't be more excited about bringing the experience and knowledge Ed has in his career to our team and program," says Nocita. "His extensive background just elevated us to the next level, and I am grateful to have him on board!"

Early in his career, Deugan spent time serving as a head collegiate softball coach at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Ga. (2001-04) as well as Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. (2000).  Most of his early coaching stints also came in the state of Iowa, as he served as an assistant softball coach at Des Moines East (2001) and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter (1999).

Deugan is a 1997 graduate of the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.  He also earned his Master of Arts degree in Athletics Administration from the U of I in 1999.  From 1997-98, he served as a team manager for the Hawkeye softball team.   

Deugan is expected to begin his duties with BVU later this month.
