Softball Powers its Way to Wins over No. 1 and No. 4 Seeds

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 13, 2021) - The late season power surge continued for the Buena Vista University softball team on Thursday afternoon as the Beavers connected for five home runs to help send them to upset wins over No. 1 Coe and No. 4 seed Luther, respectively.

The Kohawks held an early 2-0 lead after an inning, and that lead stood until BVU chalked up three runs in the fourth to go in front 3-2.  Senior Carlee Guyett got the rally going by belting her team-leading sixth home run of the season before Mckynze Hansen roped an opposite field, 2-run triple.

Guyett, who went 2-for-3, added an RBI single to get the scoring going in the fifth before Rylee Cain added a sacrifice fly and Hansen launched a three-run to straight away centerfield and an 8-2 lead.

Coe got back as close as 8-5 after a 3-run home run of its own in the bottom of the fifth but it was all Beavers from there.  Michaela Mason hit a solo home run to begin the sixth before Cain added an RBI double for the game's final score.

Peyton Gross came on in relief to start the second inning and would pitch 3.1 innings en route to her seventh win of the year.  She scattered five hits and was charged with three runs while striking out four.

Hansen finished 2-for4 with the triple, home run and five RBI.  Cain and Guyett each had two hits and a pair of RBI while Mason chipped in with two hits and scored two runs.

The Beavers advanced to face No. 4 seed Luther, which knocked off No. 5 Simpson in the opening round.  The momentum kept going for the Beavers who got an RBI double from Guyett in the first inning before she later scored on a wild pitch.

Mason then singled home a run in the second and then launched her second home run of the day in the third to make it a 5-0 cushion.  Carrie Dose, who hit the big grand slam during Wednesday's victory over Loras, connected for her second home run of the year in the sixth for a 6-0 lead.  Luther got a solo home run in the bottom of that inning for its only run of the game.

Mason added three more hits to help lead BVU and drove in three runs.  Hansen and Dose each added two hits while Guyett also had two hits, drove in a run and scored once.

Ashtyn Miller went the distance inside the circle for BVU, scattering seven hits, striking out five and walkig three.

Buena Vista improves to 19-20 on the year and will play on Friday at noon against the winner of the 10:00 a.m. elimination game between No. 1 Coe and No. 4 Luther.
