STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 30, 2021) - The Buena Vista University softball team dropped a pair of games to the University of Dubuque on Friday evening by scores of 6-0 and 7-4.
The Spartans used their power to help aid in both wins. A three-run home run in the second inning of game one put them out front early before they added three more unearned runs in the third. That was all that was needed as both teams finished with just five hits.
Carlee Guyett highlighted the game for BVU at the plate with a two-out double to the gap in left center to become the program's all-time career leaders in doubles with 40. She would add a second on the day in game two. Senior
Michaela Mason was the only multi-hitter for BVU, going 2-for-3.
Ashtyn Miller went the distance in the circle while allowing just three earned runs on only five hits.
Dubuque (20-12, 9-11 A-R-C) kept the power going early in game two with a pair of RBI doubles in the second while later adding a two-run home run in the fifth to make it 5-0. The Beavers trailed 7-0 heading to the home half of the seventh inning before putting together a monster rally which nearly put the tying run at the plate.Â
Alyssa Barnhart doubled home the first two Beaver runs of the day before a sacrifice fly from
Savanna Pohlmann on a line dive to center made it 7-3. Guyett came through again with an RBI single to make it a three-run game, but that was as close as the team could get.
Guyett finished 3-for-4 with the RBI to help lead BVU at the plate.Â
Peyton Gross suffered the loss for BVU and is now 4-8 overall.
Buena Vista is now 15-16 overall (7-12 A-R-C) and will look to salvage the final game of the series when the two teams take the field again on Sunday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
