STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 16, 2021) - The Buena Vista University softball team returns home to begin a nine-game home stand which begins with a three-game series this Saturday and Sunday against No. 14 Wartburg College.

LAST TIME OUT
The Beavers picked up an 8-4 in the series opener last weekend at Luther, giving the team its first win over the Norse since 2006. Luther, however, did come back to win the final two games of the series, 8-0 (5 inn.) and 16-0 (5 inn.). Saturday's opener reached the top of the seventh inning before weather forced the game to be suspended until Sunday morning. The two teams wrapped up that game before playing the doubleheader directly after. Â
SCOUTING WARTBURG
The Knights sit alone atop the American Rivers Conference standings despite being tied in the loss column with both Central and Coe. The team, however does own a tiebreaker with the Dutch after winning 2-of-3 games in Pella this past weekend. Wartburg came into the season picked second in the preseason coaches poll just four points behind the Dutch who were the preseason favorites. Central was able to salvage the final game of the series 9-6. The Knights will face the Kohawks in a three-game series to close out the regular season. Wartburg comes in ranked fourth during A-R-C play with a .301 average and a team ERA of 3.42. In the 14 games played, the Knights have chalked up 95 runs thanks in part to 20 doubles and 19 home runs. Lauren Frerichs has six of those doubles and three of the long balls and is hitting .349 in league play. Overall, Kaci Sherwood is hitting a team-high .414 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 70at-bats. Leah Campos is also hitting over .400 and has scored 19 times. Sydney Illg is third on the team in average (.375), second in home runs (5) and tops in runs scored (35). On the mound, Maddie Rog is a team-best 7-2 on the year with a 2.43 ERA and eight complete games. Ashley Nelson is second with six wins along with a team-leading 1.40 ERA while working 40.0 innings. Rog has a team-high 46.0 innings pitched with Tarah Wehde also pitching in 44.0. Defensively, the team has been solid all year and currently has a .957 fielding percentage with no player having made more than seven errors on the year.

ON DECK: The Beavers host Nebraska Wesleyan for games one and two of that series next Wednesday, April 21, at 4:00 p.m. They will then entertain the Prairie Wolves for the final game of the series on Wednesday, April 27.
