GREENVILLE, Ill. (March 8, 2021) - It was a strong end to the three-day road trip for the Buena Vista softball team on Monday afternoon as the Beavers captured a doubleheader sweep at Greenville University by scores of 4-2 and 6-2, respectively.
It marked the second doubleheader sweep of a team this season for the Beavers who went 3-3 on the trip and are now 8-4 overall this season.
The Panthers (0-4) grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener before BVU was finally able to get on the board with three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by junior
Ashtyn Miller's two-run home run to centerfield.Â
Shelby Gunther added an RBI single to left later in the frame to make it a two-run cushion.Â
Carrie Dose, who notched the win on the mound, also chimed in at the plate with a big insurance RBI single to center in the sixth to make it a 4-1 lead. Greenville was able to push one run across in the home half but that was as close as they would get.
Miller finished 3-for-3 in the contest and also added a double while scoring twice. Dose added a pair of hits as BVU out-hit Greenville, 10-4. Inside the circle, Dose went the distance, scattering the four hits and allowing just the two runs while striking out three.
The Beavers pounded out 12 more hits in the finale, including three more from Miller, who is now tied for the team lead with 17 on the year.Â
Nataliah Murillo got the scoring started with her first collegiate home run on the first pitch she saw in the third.Â
Alyssa Barnhart and
Carlee Guyett followed with RBI singles later in the inning to make it 3-0.
Greenville did respond in the bottom half off of starter
Kennedi Claycomb with a two-run double to get within one run. That was as close as the Panthers would get as
Kayden Archibeque singled home a run in the fourth while Murillo added an RBI sac bunt in the fifth.Â
Rylee Cain drove home the game's final run with an RBI single to center in the sixth.
Miller went 3-for-4 to help lead BVU at the plate, Barnhart was 2-for-5 and
Savanna Pohlmann was 2-for-4 with a double. Claycomb also went the distance on the mound for the Beavers, scattering seven hits and being charged with two runs while striking out a career-best eight and walking none.
After beginning the season with a dozen games away from home, Buena Vista is scheduled to play its home opener this upcoming Sunday afternoon (March 14) when Bethel University visits for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader. The games are going to be played inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium on the BVU campus.
