STORM LAKE, Iowa (March 26, 2021) - The Buena Vista men's soccer team is set to begin its adjusted 2020 season when it hosts Wartburg College for the season opener on Saturday afternoon. Due to COVID-19, the soccer season is one of the fall sports that is competing this spring.

SERIES HISTORY
The two teams will be squaring off against each other for the 24th time on Saturday with the Knights holding a 19-4 series lead....BVU's last win over Wartburg came in 2003 when it edged the Knights, 1-0, in Waverly...Since then, the Knights have won 17 straight match-ups against the Beavers and have allowed just four goals during that stretch.
ABOUT WARTBURG
The Knights finished 8-8 (4-4 A-R-C) in 2019 and return six of their 11 starters this season junior honorable mention all-conference selection, Kevin Duque, who started 17 games, scored five goals and dished out three assists. During league play that season, Wartburg ranked sixth overall with a 1.50 scoring average per game, but played strong defense and allowing just five total goals over those eight matches. Brennon Woody lead the A-R-C in-goal with his .622 goal-against-average and his .822 save percentage. He also posted three shutouts among his eight matches played and allowed just five goals.
ABOUT BUENA VISTA
The Beavers have a younger roster but many of those players are back from their 2019 squad where they gained a great deal of experience. The team will look to use this shortened spring campaign as a way to gain even more experience and prepare the program for a full fall schedule. Second-year head coach
Ross Minick will have just three returning starters taking the field for the eight-game slate, including senior forward
Noah Becker who turned in one goal during 2019. Senior defender
Troy Finnegan started all 17 games and recorded one assist. The team will look replace its mainstay in-goal for the last three seasons in Manny Aguilar, who graduated last year. The team played to three consecutive ties to begin the 2019 season and four of its losses came by two goals or less.
Jarrod Daniel started one game in-goal and appeared in three overall matches with three other players having seen action guarding the net.
AROUND THE CORNER
Following Saturday's season opener, the team will play the first of two straight road matches on Wednesday, March 30, at Simpson College with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
