STORM LAKE, Iowa (March 17, 2021) - The Buena Vista volleyball team returned to its home court after three straight on the road, and the Beavers got back on track in a big way on Wednesday night with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Simpson College by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-16.
The opening set was back-and-forth throughout with Simpson scoring the first three points of the set and remaining in lead until
Sydney McLaren notched back-to-back kills to pull the Beavers even at 10-10 and spark a quick 4-0 spurt that gave them the lead for good.
BVU was solid with the serve and on the defensive side of the net in the second to again pull away from the Storm midway through the frame. After it was tied at 9-9,
Taylor Caves registered one of her five kills to spark a big 6-0 run as the Beavers again posted an eight-point win.
It was much of the same in the third with the Beavers jumping out to a 4-0 lead and never looking back. It was an 18-4 cushion following an attack error by the Storm, and despite a short rally by Simpson in the end, BVU managed to pull out the nine-point victory and its third straight triumph over Simpson in the series.
McLaren finished with a match-high 10 kills to go along with 14 kills en route to her fifth double-double of the year. Freshmen
Rachel Brockney and
Bailey Schmidt followed with seven kills and both posted attack percentages over .300. Brockney and McLaren each had three ace serves with Brockney also chipping in with three total blocks.Â
Taylor Wedemeyer dished out 34 assists with
Jade Hays chiming in with 12 digs.
Niya Harris led the Storm (2-5, 2-5 A-R-C) with eight kills.
"Tonight we got to see every one of our girls on the floor, and it was really special to come out with a win," said BVU head coach
Aubrey Bell. "Bailey was lights out on the outside and I thought our serving was extremely aggressive this game. It's not easy working through lineups and kinks only in conference with so few games, but this group keeps rolling and I'm anxious to see them fight together one last time on Saturday."
Buena Vista improves to 3-4 overall (3-4 A-R-C) and will wrap up its season on Saturday afternoon by hosting the University of Dubuque (4-3, 4-4 A-R-C) at 2:00 p.m.
