Kohawks Hand Beavers First Loss of the Year

STORM LAKE, Iowa (February 27, 2021) - The Buena Vista volleyball team returned home this afternoon but fell to visiting Coe College 3-0 in an American Rivers Conference showdown inside Siebens Fieldhouse.

The opening set stayed close for the majority of the way with Coe clinging to a 14-13 lead midway through following an ace serve from Jade Hays.  The Kohawks then went on to score five of the next six points to extend the margin to five, and BVU was unable to get any closer before falling 25-19.

Coe opened up a 4-1 lead in the second and extended the margin to 11-4 to take control en route to a 25-15 victory.  The Beavers held an early 3-2 lead in the third before Coe went on a 13-2 spurt to blow the set open and win 25-13.

Junior Sydney McLaren and freshman Rachel Brockney each registered eight kills to lead BVU while freshman Kaela White added five.  The Beavers were held to a season-low .104 attack percentage.  Sophomore Taylor Wedemeyer dished out 25 assists and added five digs with freshman Molly Bense leading the way with a career-best eight digs.  BVU had just two ace serves in the match and was held without a single block.

"Obviously not the outcome we wanted or were looking for," said BVU head coach Aubrey Bell.  "The positive of the game is we beat ourselves.  We didn't give ourselves a chance to actually compete, and are hungry for the chance to bounce back on Friday."

Kate Tidman led the Kohawks (2-1, 2-1 A-R-C) with a match-high 12 kills as Madi Parson and Morgan Kluesner added eight apiece.

Buena Vista dips to 2-1 overall (2-1 A-R-C) and looks to rebound as it goes back on the road next Friday (Mar. 5) to play at Wartburg College.  The action inside of Levick Arena is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
