Football Drops 31-28 Thriller to the Kohawks

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (November 6, 2021) - The Buena Vista football team led 14-0 in the first quarter and continued to lead until midway through the third quarter before coming up just short on its final possession en route to a tough 31-28 road loss at Coe College on Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers got a pair of first quarter touchdowns and continued to lead 21-10 until Coe scored a touchdown in the final seconds of the first half to pull within 21-17 heading to the half.  The Kohawks took their first lead of the afternoon with 6:13 left in the third quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass and later made it a 10-point cushion at 31-21 after a six-yard touchdown pass with only 32 seconds left in the quarter.

BVU kept within striking distance as it stormed right back with an eight-play 71-yard drive which ended in an 11-yard touchdown catch by senior Eric Pacheco with 12:37 still to play in regulation.  Earlier in the game, Pacheco set the program's career record for touchdown grabs, moving past Jess Schmidt's previous mark of 33.

The Beaver defense gave the team another chance late as the offense got the ball back with 2:45 remaining and the ball at their own 12 yard-line.  Brandon Kyles completed a pass to Josh Lange for eight yards followed by a completion to Colby Laughlin for 29 yards out to the 49.  Three plays later, Jeremy Woodward carried the ball for six yards down to the Coe 43, but on 4th-and-2 the Kohawk defense came up big and held Kyles to no gain on his rush attempt, as BVU was forced to turn the ball over on downs with just 1:37 left en route to its 12th straight loss in the series with the Kohawks.

BVU took the opening drive down the field 60 yards in 10 plays, capped by a Brandon Kyles one-yard run before Laughlin hauled in a six-yard pass from Kyles to put the Beavers up by two scores early on.  Coe then scored 10 straight points to make it 14-10 before Kyles and Pacheco connected for a 33-yard touchdown that extend the margin to 21-10 before Coe's late touchdown made it a four-point advantage at the half.

Pacheco finished with 10 catches, 103 yards and the two touchdowns.  It's his third double-dight reception game of the year and his fifth straight game with at least 100 yards receiving.  He also set the program's single-season receiving yards record and now has 1,128, moving past the previous mark of 1,101 which he shared with Gunner Gilland.

Kyles finished 20-of-27 passing for 220 yards and three touchdowns.  Woodward carried the ball 19 times for 77 yards as the Beavers were held in check with only 71 net yards on the ground.

Nick Casey tossed for 354 yards and four touchdowns for the Kohawks (7-2, 5-2 A-R-C) after completing 27-of-44 attempts.  Coe also added 113 yards rushing, led by 58 from Ray Seidel.

Tanner Frost tallied 10 total tackles to help lead the BVU defense with three others right behind with eight, including Nate Pedersen who added one sack.  Brandon Lance picked-off his team-leading fourth pass of the year with Brady McConaty adding the other.  The team now has 16 interceptions on the season.

Buena Vista dips to 5-4 overall (4-3 A-R-C) and will close out its season next Saturday, November 13, by hosting ninth-ranked Central College inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.  Kick-off against the Dutch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
