STORM LAKE, Iowa (October 8, 2021) - The Buena Vista University volleyball continued its home schedule on Friday night by hosting Coe College, but the Kohawks started quick and finished strong en route to a 3-0 sweep during American Rivers Conference action inside of Siebens Fieldhouse (25-19, 25-19, 25-22).
The Kohawks built an early lead in the opening set but the Beavers were able to answer any run to keep within striking distance. It was only 13-12 midway through before a 9-2 spurt by Coe put them in control. The visitors then began the second set with an 11-5 surge and BVU was never really able to make a charge, getting as close as 16-11 before the Kohawks broke open a 10-point cushion. BVU did finish the set strong with six straight points before Coe captured the final point to take a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers looked poised to keep the match alive with a strong start to the third set. BVU led 5-1 out of the gate and after a kill by
Hannah Smith later in the set, went in front 10-3. Coe slowly started clawing its way back, scoring five of the next seven points to get within 12-8 only to see the Beavers extend it back out to seven at 15-8. After BVU went ahead 20-16, the Kohawks rolled off 9 of the final 11 points, including six straight, to remain unbeated in conference play (4-0).
Senior
Sydney McLaren led BVU with 10 kills while chipping in with nine digs.Â
Rachel Brockney recorded nine kills and four total blocks while Smith tallied six kills and five digs.Â
Taylor Wedemeyer dished out 29 assists and eight digs with
Kaylee Nosbisch also posting eight digs.
Kate Tidman led all players with 13 kills for the Kohawks (15-6) with teammate Grace Lueken right behind with 11.
Buena Vista is now 8-7 on the year (1-3 A-R-C) and looks to bounce back on Saturday to end the week with a home match against visiting Luther College. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
