Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn. (February 22, 2020) - The Buena Vista softball team split a pair of games to open its 2020 campaign on Saturday night inside the MSU Dome, winning the opener 8-2 against Bethany Lutheran before the Vikings held on to edge the Beavers 8-5 in the nightcap.
Junior
Carlee Guyett helped lead the charge at the plate for the Beavers in the opener, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Savanna Pohlmann also doubled and finished with two hits and scored twice. Mckynze Hansen added a hit and scored a pair of runs.
The Beavers jumped out in front 2-0 in the third before extending the lead to 5-0 in the fifth. The Vikings got one run back in the bottom half before BVU tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh. Sophomore
Peyton Gross (1-0) picked up the win inside the circle for BVU, going five innings, scattering six hits and striking out two.
That momentum carried over into the start of game two with the Beavers taking a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings. Bethany Lutheran, however, plated four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to take an 8-2 lead. BVU didn't go away quietly, however, scoring three times in the seventh and getting the tying run to the plate but came up short.
Hansen and
Carmen Morrison each had two hits as both teams tallied 11 hits apiece.
Ashtyn Miller (0-1) was charged with four runs and seven hits over 3.2 innings and suffered the loss. Gross worked 2.1 innings and also surrendered four runs and four hits.
Buena Vista (1-1) will head to Decatur, Ill., next weekend where it will play a doubleheader against Calvin College on Saturday, February 29, and then against Millikin University on Sunday, March 1.
