STORM LAKE, Iowa (January 2, 2020) - The Buena Vista women's basketball team returned to action on Thursday night for the first time since the holiday break as it hosted Coe College, and it was the Kohawks using a strong second quarter to take control en route to the 73-56 American Rivers Conference victory inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
BVU led 22-18 after the first quarter but then was held to only five points in the second frame as the Kohawks began the period on a 15-2 run to take a 37-27 lead into the half. Coe carried the momentum into the start of the second half, scoring the first 10 points to quickly extend their lead to 20 at 47-27 before a three-pointer by senior
Destiny Einerwold ended the run.
Back-to-back three-point buckets later in the quarter by junior
Erin Gerke and sophomore
Jennifer Schneider pulled the Beavers back within 51-38 before Einerwold also made a pair of free-throws with two minutes to play in the quarter to get as close as 12.
Coe, however, closed the quarter with five straight points and pushed the advantage back up to 17 at the start of the final stanza. The Beavers were never able to string a run together over the final 10 minutes as Coe led by as many as 21 during the stretch.
