STORM LAKE - The Buena Vista volleyball team has made a habit of playing five-set matches so far this season, and on Saturday it did so again with a 3-2 home victory over Bethany Lutheran in front of a Homecoming crowd.
The Beavers came out and hung on for a thrilling 25-23 win in the first set against the Vikings and also had a 25-18 win in the third. Bethany Lutheran bounced back to even the match each time following a BVU win, but in the fifth. the Beavers pulled away late en route to the 15-11 victory.
Freshman
Kaitie Serkiz turned in a career-high 18 kills in the contest and was the only Beaver in double digits. Sophomore
Sydney McLaren just missed out on a double-double with nine kills, despite a team-high 44 swings. She registered 11 digs and had a pair of block assists.Â
Taylor Wedemeyer tallied 33 assists and 17 digs and
Summer Goss had 25 digs and six assists. The team had a balanced attack on defense with six different players with at least 10 digs in the match.
"Super proud of our girls for grinding through and finishing a five-set win," said BVU head coach
Aubrey Havlichek. "Kaitie was lights out for us with 18 kill and only five errors. Errors are what continue to haunt us and once we minimize those we make and capitalize on our good plays, we will be a force to be reckoned with."
Buena Vista improves to 3-9 on the year and continues its home schedule with two more this upcoming week beginning with Tuesday night when it hosts Minnesota-Morris at 6:30 p.m.
