Beavers Sweep Pioneers Prior to A-R-C Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STORM LAKE - The Buena Vista softball team wrapped up non-conference play on Thursday afternoon by hosting Grinnell College, and the Beavers rallied to win the opener 4-2 before completing the doubleheader sweep with a commanding 9-1 triumph in five innings of game two.

BVU trailed throughout most of game one until rallying with a run in the fourth and three in the sixth.  Sydney Carroll put the Beavers on the board with an RBI double in the fourth inning before BVU took advantage a dropped line drive off the bat of Taylor Frain with one out and runners at second and third that tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth.

Mckynze Hansen then came through with a big two-run single through the left side that scored both Carroll and Frain.

Ashtyn Miller, who came on to start the fifth inning, worked a perfect seventh inning to improve to 4-0 on the year.

The Beavers wasted little time getting things rolling in the nightcap, scoring four times in the second inning and never looked back.  A double steal by Hansen and Pohlmann made it a 2-0 contest before Michaela Mason broke things open with a two-run single.  Miller, who came in during a defensive switch, added an RBI single to make it 5-0 in the fourth inning.

The Pioneers did get a run in the fifth on an RBI triple but despite chalking up seven hits and four extra-base knocks, could only push across one run.

Pohlmann had a big game for the Beavers, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles.  Her third hit was a two-run single in the fifth before Carlee Guyett ended things with a two-run single right back up the middle.

Pohlmann also chimed in with three runs scored while Carroll crossed twice.  BVU had 11 hits in the contest with nine different players recording at least one.

Peyton Gross went the distance in the circle for the Beavers, allowing just one run on seven hits.  She struck out four and walked only one en route to her eighth win of the season.

Buena Vista improves to 14-6 overall and now shifts its focus to American Rivers Conference play which begins on Saturday afternoon when the team hosts Wartburg College in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
