Softball Takes Down Augsburg and Hamline on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Buena Vista softball team had its six-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, but the Beavers now have a new streak at three following their 7-0 win over Augsburg and 3-2 triumph against Hamline on Sunday.

Both games started quietly as the pitchers were dueling out but the Beavers put together one big inning in each contest.  Against the Auggies, it came in the fourth inning when the blue and gold chalked up four runs.  Carmen Morrison got the scoring started with her first career hit - a scorching double to the gap in left center - that also resulted in her first career RBI.  Savanna Pohlmann doubled then drove home Morrison with a bloop double down the line in right.  Mckynze Hansen and Carlee Guyett capped things off with RBI singles to center.

Michaela Mason launched her first home run of the year to make it a 5-0 advantage in the fifth and then doubled home another run in the seventh for a 6-0 margin.  Kate Lesmeister also chipped in with her second double of the game later in the inning to push across the game's final run.

Mason finished 2-for-4 with the two RBI and two runs scored to lead a BVU attack that posted 15 hits in the game, including eight that went for extra bases.  Marissa Promes picked up the win after working four strong innings, allowing no runs and surrendering just two hits while striking out one.  Ashtyn Miller came on in relief to pitch the final three innings, worked around three hits and recorded  four strikeouts.

It was a pitcher's duel throught the entire game with Hamline and it came down to the wire.  It was scoreless until the fifth when BVU broke through to score all three of its runs in the game.  It took advantage of a pair of fielding errors and got on the board with Kayden Archibeque's sacrifice fly.  Mason continued her big day by driving home the final two runs with a single down the right field line.

That proved to be just enough support for freshman Peyton Gross, who tossed her first career complete game.  She was one strike away from making that a complete-game shutout, but the Pipers pulled within a run with a two-out double to the gap in left center and left the tying run on third as Gross recorded her career-best seven strikeout to end the contest and send BVU to its eighth win in nine games.

Guyett and Mason each had two hits for the Beavers as the team totaled only six.

Buena Vista is now 5-1 on the trip and will play its final two games on Tuesday starting with Edgewood at 1:00 p.m. CDT.  It closes that day against UW-Platteville at 3:00 p.m. CDT.
