Box Score 2 ROCHESTER, Minn. - Freshman pitcher Ashtyn Miller picked up her first collegiate victory by throwing a complete-game shutout against Gustavus Adolphus to begin the day for Buena Vista, but the Beavers couldn't hold the lead in its final game of the day as St. Catherine's rallied to pick up a 5-4 win.
Miller scattered eight hits and struck out a career-best six as BVU picked up its first victory of the season to begin the day. She also doubled and scored a run at the plate. Sophomore Carlee Guyett doubled home a pair in the fifth to make it a 3-0 lead before later scoring on senior Taylor Frain's single to center.
Sophomore Brooke Linderman drove home the game's final run in the sixth inning with a double that scored Miller.
Buena Vista finished with eight hits in the contest and stranded just four runners.
The Beavers kept the momentum going into their game with St. Catherine, using a key error to help them plate three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead.
St. Catherine cut into that lead with a run in the second before taking its first lead with three runs in the third.
BVU came back in the fourth by scoring another unearned run to make it a 4-4 game. Both teams then went scoreless in the fifth before St. Catherine was able to push across a run in the sixth for a 5-4 lead. The Beavers got the lead-off batter aboard in the seventh but a pop out, fly out and ground out would end the game.
Guyett continues her strong start to the year at the plate with her second mutli-hit game of the year, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Michaela Mason doubled and also finished with two hits and a run scored.
Marissa Promes went the distance on the mound and suffered the loss, depsite allowing just three earned runs on seven hits. She walked three and struck out three.
Buena Vista is now 1-3 on the year and is scheduled to travel to Rosemount, Ill., on March 2-3 where it will play four games beginning with a doubleheader against Lake Forest College on the 2nd. First pitch against the Foresters is slated for 3:00 p.m.
