Box Score 2 The Buena Vista softball team had no easy task facing a pair of top-25 teams in the what was the first two games of the year, and the Beavers would come out on the wrong end of both, falling 8-0 (6 inn.) against #21 UW-Oshkosh before #7 St. Thomas upended them 16-4 (5 inn.).
Oshkosh scored single runs in both the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead but then broke things open with four more in the fourth before ending things with a pair in the home half of the sixth.
Sophomore Carlee Guyett had a pair of hits and finished 2-for-3 to lead BVU at the plate while Ashtyn Miller and Kayden Archibeque both recorded their first career hits.
BVU was plagued by four errors in the contest which did lead to three unearned runs.
Marissa Promes got the start inside the circle and was charged with three earned runs over 3.2 innings of work, allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out one. Miller also made her collegiate pitching debut, going the final 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and a pair of runs.
In the nightcap, the Tommies, jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second before BVU cut the deficit to 6-4 with four runs in its half of the second. Guyett started the scoring with a bases loaded walk before Michaela Mason drove home a run on a fielder's choice. Taylor Frain brought the team within two with a two-run double to left, scoring Guyett and Mason.
From there, St. Thomas responded with five runs in the third, one in the fourth and four more in the fifth. The Tommies outhit BVU, 14-2, with seven of those base knocks going for extra bases.
Miller had the other hit for the Beavers which was her first career double.
Promes again got the start in the circle but lasted just 1.1 innings after being charged with six runs on six hits. Peyton Gross made her Beaver debut and worked 2.2 innings while Miller pitched one inning.
Buena Vista (0-2) will conclude its season-opening trip to the Rochester Dome on Sunday with two more games beginning with Gustavus Adolphus at 8:00 a.m. followed by St. Catherine at 12:00 p.m.
