Beavers Fall Short at Wartburg 68-54 in Final Game of the Year

Buena Vista gave No. 14 Wartburg a strong fight on Wednesday night in what was the final game of the year for the Beavers, but the Knights used a strong second quarter and never looked back en route to a 68-54 victory.

BVU came out of the gate strong and took a 20-14 lead into the second quarter but that's when Wartburg held the Beavers to just three points and clawed back for a 27-23 halftime lead.  Wartburg pushed the margin to double digits (50-40) through three quarters.

Back-to-back buckets by the Beavers to begin the fourth quarter brought them back within six, but Wartburg responded with an 8-0 run go back up 14.  The Knights led by as many as 18 down the stretch.

Erin Gerke nailed 5-of-6 shots from long range and finished with a team-high 20 points.  She also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists.  Jenn Poots closed out her Beaver career with nine points as Jennifer Schneider added seven.

Buena Vista shot 39 percent from the field in the contest, including 7-of-18 from downtown.  

Wartburg had three players score in double figures led by Adrienne Boettger's 16.  The Knights shot 47 percent from beyond the arc and 50 percent from the field overall.

Aside from Poots, the game was also the final contest in the careers of McKenna Whitehill, Morgan Muhlbauer, Holly Schneider and Hannah Appleseth.

Buena Vista finishes the season at 7-18 overall (2-14 A-R-C) while the Knights improve to 21-3 (14-1 A-R-C) and will close out their regular season on Saturday afternoon at the University of Dubuque.
