HANCOCK, Mich. - The Buena Vista volleyball team capped off a strong weekend in the upper peninsula with a pair of 3-0 sweeps on Saturday against both Grace Christian University and Mount Mary, respectively. The two wins push the team's overall current win streak to five straight.
In the opener against GCU, the Beavers came out strong and used another stellar hitting performance to take control. The team had 16 kills and just five errors in the opening set en route to a 25-19 victory. It also had 16 kills in the third set compared to just three errors. For the match, BVU recorded a hitting percentage of .340.
Sophomore
Sydney McLaren and freshman
Hannah Smith each registered a match-high 11 kills to help lead the way. McLaren had just one error for a .455 attack percentage and fell one dig shy of a double-double. Smith had just two errors and posted a stellar .529 percentage on just 17 attempts. Freshman
Kaitie Serkiz was right behind with nine kills on 24 swings.
Taylor Wedemeyer did post a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs to go along with a match-high five ace serves. Senior
Summer Goss also had five ace serves and posted a match-high 15 digs.
The day ended with the third sweep of the trip, this time against Mount Mary by scores of 25-9, 25-12, 25-14. BVU did not allow more than six kills in any of the three sets while registering 37 of its own. The team began with only two errors in the opening set for a match-high .481 percentage.
McLaren had a team-high eight kills to lead a balanced attack as Serkiz followed with seven and
Camryn McClintock with six. Goss had four more ace serves, giving her 10 for the weekend as she moves within nine of fourth-place on the program's all-time list of 118.
Wedemeyer and
Savanna Wuest each totaled 12 assists with Goss adding 13 digs and is now 15 shy of moving up the program's all-time list and into fifth-place overall (1,333).
Buena Vista is now 8-10 overall and will be off until October 11 when it will then return to American Rivers Conference play by hosting Loras College at 7 p.m. The team will then turn right around and wrap up its home schedule on October 12 by hosting Luther College at 1:30 p.m.
