CEDAR RAPIDS - After falling behind 2-0 on the road at Coe College on Saturday afternoon, the Buena Vista volleyball team nearly came all the way back to force the decisive fifth set, but came up short in the fourth, 27-25.
BVU faced set point late in the fifth with a 24-23 lead, but the Kohawks fought off that rally and would score the final two points of the match to win the set and take the match. Coe jumped out to the early lead with a 25-22 opening-set victory before handing BVU a 25-16 setback in the second. The Beavers were able to stay alive and take it to the fourth set after a 25-23 win in the third.
Freshmen
Taylor Caves and
Kaitie Serkiz each finished with 12 kills to help lead the attack for the Beaver offense while sophomore
Sydney McLaren followed with 11. Caves had just three errors and posted a team-leading .375 attack percentage. BVU had just 17 errors for the entire match despite 175 total swings. McLaren also registered her ninth double-double of the year after adding 10 digs.
Taylor Wedemeyer dished out 38 assists and had 13 digs.Â
Summer Goss added a match-high 24 digs.
Kate Tidman had a match-high 26 kills, to go along with 16 digs, for the Kohaws, who improved to 14-17 overall (4-3 A-R-C). Â
"It was a disappointing end to the week," said BVU head coach
Aubrey Havlichek. "We've continued to improve but our age got the best of us this weekend. Our middles are improving every game, Taylor [Caves] was stellar at the net offensively with 12 kills. Cam [Camyrn McClintock] came in clutch with excellent serving and great defense at the end of that fourths et to give us a chance to take the come-from-behind win, but we came up just short. This team has alot of grit, now we just need to make it consistent."
The Beavers, now 11-14 overall (3-4 A-R-C) will look to get back on track when it wraps up the conference schedule on Tuesday night at regular season champion, Wartburg College, in a match that begins at 7 p.m.
