Men's Soccer Drops Thriller to Dordt on Wednesday

Box Score

The Buena Vista men's soccer team returned home on Wednesday night to host Dordt College and try to pick up its first win of the year, but the Defenders capitalized early in the second half to edge BVU in a hard fought thriller, 1-0.

It was a defensive battle throughout with Dordt holding a narrow edge in total shots, 14-12.  BVU had several near misses at finding the back of the net and held the Defenders in check the entire way.

Dordt broke a scoreless game three minutes into the second half when they took advantage of a mishandled clear out attempt by BVU deep in the Defenders end of the field.

BVU had its chances to answer and just missed on a handful of open net chances by sending the shots just wide or just over the cross bar.

Gerardo Rosiles had a team-leading three shots in the contest with Noah Bardwell and David Arona each following with two.  Just two of the team's 12 shots were on-goal with only three of Dordt's coming on-goal.

"Dordt scored a stunning goal and we couldn't capitalize on our chances," said head coach Ben McArthur.  "Our guys are getting better and better every game and the work rate is still top notch.  We need to get hungry in the front of the goal and try to knock in some goals. Storm Lake brothers Gerardo Rosiles and Eugenio Rosiles had great games. A bunch of the guys had really nice games but those two are starting to play at a high level.  We will try to get in a couple good training sessions before a double header this weekend! Sunday afternoon is senior night and it will be good to honor those guys who have put so much into the program."

Manuel Aguilar went the distance in-goal for BVU allowing just the one goal and posting two saves.

Buena Vista dips to 0-3 overall and will go after its first win of the year when it travels to Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon, September 8, for a 3:30pm contest.
