Box Score Buena Vista senior Gum Riak scored the match-tying goal on a free kick just outside the box early in the second half, but then it was Mount Marty that followed with the go-ahead score off a free kick of its own midway through the half, and the Lancers hung on to hand the Beavers a tough 2-1 home loss on Monday night.
The Lancers took the early 1-0 lead with under 10 minutes gone by in the contest when they came up with a loose ball in front of the net and were able to knock it past a diving Manuel Garcia Aguilar. That's how things stood until a fould on Mount Marty just outside the box allowed Riak to set up shop and knock through his first goal since his sophomore campaign and the 10th of his career.
BVU, which had dropped six one-goal matches entering the night, where in search of its victory of the season. The team fought until the end, but the Lancers converted a free kick of their own on a kick from the 25-yard line which carried into about the five before Cesar Gonzalez broke the tie and gave Mount Marty the lead.
In a match where a total of nine yellow cards were issues, the Beavers continued to give a strong effort to the end, but were unable to get off many clean attempts on-goal.
"Sam Mclachlan and Jhareese Walker off the bench played great for us tonight," said head coach Ben McArthur. "They were able to take over the middle and give us a chance to win. Its tough to lose on a silly free kick, but we will learn from our mistakes and get ready to go play Luther Saturday. Gum Riak scored a great goal for us tonight and we need him to get going in the attack."
The loss puts Buena Vista at 0-9 on the year, and now the team will shift its focus to American Rivers Conference play as it travels to Luther College (8-1, 1-0 A-R-C) on Saturday afternoon for a 4:00pm start.
