On what was another cool April afternoon, Buena Vista was able to rally with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Dubuque, 3-2.
The first portion of the game saw solid pitching from both sides, as the first two runs were both scored due in part to defensive miscues. Both teams combined to total 6 errors with Dubuque being responsible for 5 of them. After a single by Parker Truesdell in the third, he was able to steal second and then reach third on a throwing error. Peyton Renning flew out to center allowing Truesdell to score on the sac fly. Dubuque tied the score up in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a Beaver fielding error and a wild pitch. Two bloop singles led to a run being scored by Dubuque in the top of the fifth, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead. Renning doubled and scored Truesdell in the bottom half to again tie things up at 2-2. Then in the sixth, the Beavers took the lead with Tyler Tennyson scoring after an error by Dubuque's third-baseman. The Spartans committed five errors in the contest. Dubuque had a few chances to tie the game late, but the pitching combination of Gage Smart and Nick Henrichs got the job done.
Smart got the start and took the win, while Henrichs earned his third save. Smart went 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits while walking four and striking out four. Henrichs struck out five without issuing a walk over the final 2.1 innings.
BVU was held to just four hits in the game and struck out 12 times.
Chase Kueter went the distance for Dubuque, allowing just four hits, striking out 12 and not walking a batter.
The win was the third straight for BVU which improves to 11-11 97-2 IIAC).
