Beaver Softball with a Pair of Big Wins to Open Illinois Wesleyan Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

After splitting a doubleheader with sixth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Friday afternoon, the Buena Vista softball team had to face the host Titans in the first game on Saturday morning to begin the two-day Illinois Wesleyan Tournament, and the Beavers picked up the thrilling 1-0 upset victory. The team then closed out its day with a big 8-2 triumph over Wittenberg.

It was another nailbiter with the Titans, as both starting pitchers were dealing all game long.  BVU logged just four hits in the contest while IWU had seven.  The biggest of those base knocks for the Beavers came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jeanne Bramhall recorded an infield single to third which scored the eventual game-winning run.  Marissa Promes, who came on in relief to pitch three innings, shutdown IWU in the seventh to improve to 6-1 on the year.  She scattered just three hits in the game and struck out three.

Autumn Boland had two of the team's four hits as Carlee Guyett went 0-for-3 to snap a 19-game hitting streak to begin her career.

The Beavers wasted no time getting on the board against Wittenberg later in the day, plating all eight of their runs in the first inning.  Keely Bycroft had an infield RBI single to start the scoring before Boland walked to plate the second run.  Taylor Frain was then hit by a pitch to make it 3-0, Kennedy Colvert singled right back up the middle before Bramhall came through with a big two-run single of her own.

Wittenberg, which finished with 11 hits in the contest, doubled home a run in the second before a single in the sixth plated its final one.

Bycroft went the distance in the circle and picked up the win to improve to 2-2 on the year.  She struck out five and walked just one and worked around five doubles.

Michaela Mason, who hit a pair of home runs in Friday's win over IWU, doubled and finished with a pair of hits in this contest and was the only Beaver to record an extra-base knock among the team's 10 hits.

Buena Vista improves to 14-6 on the season and is scheduled to play DePauw and Wittenberg on Sunday to wrap up the tournament.  Both games are weather permitting and are scheduled to begin at 11:00am and 1:15pm, respectively.
