Softball Drops Thriller to Case Western; Blanks Dickinson 12-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Buena Vista softball team began its Friday with a tough 4-3 setback in walk-off fashion in the opener against Case Western before bouncing back with its second lopsided victory in as many days by blanking Dickinson University, 12-0, in five innings.

Buena Vista rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to take the lead with three runs in the second, but Case Western Reserve tied it in the fourth before winning, 4-3, in walk-off fashion over the Beavers with an infield single in the bottom of the seventh.

A two-out, two-run double by Case Western plated the game's first two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead.  BVU scored all three of its runs in the second, capped by a big two-out triple by Carlee Guyett.

With runners at first and third and two outs in the fourth, Case Reserve stole home as the runner from first dove back in safely just ahead of the tag.

BVU threatened in the fifth as Guyett walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch.  She was then thrown out at third trying to steal two pitches later when she over slid the base.  Michaela Mason then walked and stole second, but the threat again ended when Bycroft lined out to left center.

BVU then had runners at first and second and just one out in the seventh but had back-to-back fly outs to left to end the frame.

Case Western took advantage of a dropped fly ball in left to begin the seventh which put the leadoff hitter at second.  After a sacrifice to bunt moved her to third with one out, a chopper over the head off Moriah Guyett plated the game-winner as BVU suffered its first loss of the trip.

BVU was held to just seven hits, including two by Kennedy Colvert.

It was all Beavers from the opening pitch in their game against Dickinson.  BVU was the home team for the first time on the trip and went on to plate five runs in the first inning and seven in the second.  Mckynze Hansen got the scoring started with a two-run double in the first while Taylor Frain singled home two.  Guyett had the big base knock in the second when she laced a three-run double to the gap in left center field.

That was more than enough run support for the pitching duo of Marissa Promes and Bycroft.  Promes went the first four and allowed just one hit while working around seven walks.  Bycroft came on to close things out with a perfect fifth and send BVU to its first shutout victory of the season.

Michaela Mason was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for BVU, which pounded out 11 hits in the contest.  Guyett added two more hits, drove in three and scored twice while Hansen finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.  Guyett is now 20 for her first 32 at the plate to start her career and has had at least one hit in each of the team's first 10 games.

Buena Vista is now 8-2 on the year and will play a doubleheader on Saturday against UW-La Crosse beginning at 9:00am MST.
