Beavers with Big Comeback Win over Macalester

Box Score

Senior Holly Schnieder scored seven of her team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter and made 1-of-2 at the free-throw line with two seconds left, as the Buena Vista women's basketball team came from double-digits down in the final period to edge Macalester, 57-56, in the consolation game of the Beth Baker Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Schneider, who was 6-of-13 overall from the field, finished with her second double-double in three games to start the season, as she hauled in 11 rebounds.  Destiny Einerwold followed with 10 points and six boards and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Erin Streit chipped in with eight points and four rebounds while Erin Gerke added six points and a team-high five assists.

BVU shot 41 percent from the field overall, despite going 4-of-22 from beyond the arc.

After going just 3-of-13 shooting in the first quarter, the Beavers began to find their touch, shooting 50 percent in both the second and fourth quarters while going 6-for-13 in the third.

Macalester led 18-10 after the opening quarter and took a 38-25 lead into the half.  The Beavers slowly chipped away at that lead and got within 50-40 after three quarters before outscoring the Scots, 17-6 in the fourth.

The Scots made a free-throw to start the forth and go in front by 11, but that's when BVU got a three-pointer from Gerke that began a 14-0 run over the next six minutes and put the Beavers in front 54-51 with under 4:00 to play.

Macalester rolled off four straight points later in the quarter, including a pair of free-throws with 30 seconds left that tied the game at 56-56.  Gerke took a shot at giving the Beavers the lead with a three-pointer with under 10 seconds to go but was off target, only to have Schneider grab the rebound and get fouled with just two seconds left.  She missed the first free-throw attempt but got the second to go through, and the Scots would turn the ball over on the inbounds to end the game.

The Scots outrebounded BVU, 44-31, and held a 13-5 edge in second chance points.  The Beavers held Macalester to 30 percent shooting overall, including an 0-9 stretch in the fourth quarter.

Buena Vista improves to 2-1 on the year while Maclester remained winless at 0-4.  Up next for the Beavers is a non-conference road game at Gustavus Adolphus (2-1) on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m.  The Gusties were receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll.
