Box Score 2 Ethan McHenry provided the late-game insurance in game one of Saturday's doubleheader to help secure the Buena Vista baseball team's series win over Dubuque. The Spartans did, however, come back to avoid the sweep with a 6-1 win in game two.
BVU took a 2-1 lead to the ninth before McKenry belted a three-run shot to push the lead to 5-1. Bryce Rheault and Peyton Renning each had three hits in the contest and drove in runs in the sixth to take its first lead.
Dubuque got on the board in the first with an RBI groundout.
Renning and Kolby Hilgenberg each doubled twice with Porter Sartor adding one.
Jake Lewis gave the Beavers another solid outing on the hill, going 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out seven. Dalton Mason came out of the bullpen to pitch the final 2.1 innings, working around a pair of base hits with five strikeouts.
BVU led 1-0 in the third after a Devin Wagenman sacrifice fly, but that was about all the offense the Beavers could push across.
The Spartans took their first lead since the opening inning of game one with three runs in the fifth. They then got a three-run home run in the seventh to open up a five-run cushion.
Buena Vista finished with only five singles in the contest.
Kennan Jones (1-3) suffered the loss, going 4.2 innings and charged with three runs and five hits.
The Beavers are now 11-8 (4-2 IIAC) and will remain on the road for a conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Nebraska Wesleyan. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00pm.
