Box Score Jasmine Demers scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Jordan Tynes added 15 points and five boards, and the Buena Vista women's basketball team used a big fourth quarter to overcome a nine-point halftime deficit and knock off visiting Coe College on Saturday afternoon, 79-72.
Demers finished the game shooting 7-of-15 from the field and 7-of-10 at the free-throw line while Tynes also added five field goals and a 5-of-6 peformance at the charity stripe. Sidney Beckman was the third Beaver to score in double figures, chipping in with 12 points to go along with three steals.
Coe held a 25-16 lead after the first quarter and remained in front by that same margin going into the half. The Beavers, who forced 29 turnovers in the game, used that stellar defensive play in the second half to slowly chip away at the lead. The Kohawks held a 10-point lead on multiple occassions early in the third quarter before a 6-0 run by BVU made it a 54-50 contest.
Nicole Snyder nailed a three-pointer and McKenna Whitehill added a layup as the Beavers pulled even at 57-57 before Coe scored the final four points of the frame for a 61-57 advantage.
The Kohawks (11-12, 6-8 IIAC) hit a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the fourth to build a seven-point cushion before the Beavers began to take over. BVU used a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to take their first lead of the game midway through the final stanza at 66-64.
BVU pushed the lead up to five, and despite missing 19 free-throws in the contest, the Beavers made four straight big ones down the stretch take a nine-point lead and secure the win.
The Beavers held a 25-4 advantage in points off turnovers in the contest which helped them overcome a 24-of-43 effort at the charity stripe.
Buena Vista improves to 12-11 overall (8-6 IIAC). With the win, BVU did clinch an IIAC Tournament spot and will begin the final week of the regular season with a road trip to Central College (9-14, 2-12 IIAC) on Wednesday night at 6:00pm.
